BARRIE LEWIS

We are sad to report that Barrie Lewis of Cheltenham passed away on July 11, 2010.

Barrie was a brother to Marilyn, Graham and the late Councillor Gordon Lewis of Cwmparc.

He was born in Dunraven Terrace, Ynyswen and attended Penyrenglyn Junior School and Pentre Sec.

Although Barrie had moved to Cheltenham many years ago, he will be remembered fondly by many of us locally from his regular visits back to the Rhondda and for his lifelong commitment to rugby.

His funeral service is being held on Thursday, July 22 in Cheltenham.

My name is Stephen Hawkins, and I live in Wigan, Lancashire.

My Great Grandfather, Thomas Hawkins (b. 1856 in Upper Lydbrook, Gloucestershire) Abandoned his children in Wigan, and remarried.

The first child of that second marriage was Victor Thomas Hawkins (b. 1900 in Ludlow, Shropshire).

The second child was Frank Hawkins (b. 1901 in Worsbrough, Yorkshire)

Sometime before 1911, their Mother, Clara Hawkins, formerly Clara Jones, (nee Farber) died.

Thomas lodged at the home of Owen Jones, 11, Tynewydd, Treherbert, whilst his two young sons (Victor & Frank) were in a foster home run by the Poor Law Service. They stayed with a Widow at either 57 or 51, Kenilworth Road, Cadoxtton.

My Grandfather (David Charles Hawkins) had gone to live with his Father, Thomas. When this became inconvenient, my Grandfather was kicked out. It took him two years to get back to his siblings in Wigan. He worked on farms for some food and a bed for the night. Sometimes he stayed longer in one place. After two years on the road, he finally got back to Wigan.

As I understand it, Victor emigrated. Perhaps Frank remained in the area, and his descendants still live there. Please contact me if you have any information about this family.

Hi

I am looking for relatives of William George and Sarah Morgan (nee Davies) who lived in Treherbert (possibly 27 Dumfries Street) between 1910 and 1952 when Sarah died. We believe that William died around 1945) They had 7 children;  William Octavius (b 1916) Minnie, Joyce, Doris, Phyllis, Florence (Floss) and Betty.
William (my direct relative) married Clarice May Jones in 1940.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Marina Banks

Hello

I am hoping you may be able to help me get hold of an old school photograph. It is a school football team photo taken in 1974 at Penyrenglin Junior school.

My name is Paul Thomas. Other team members were Stephen and Wayne Pool, Ralph Jones, Paul Culverhouse and Nigel Jones. Another team member was Robert Candy, who was holding a football with the year written on it.

I lost this photo many years ago and have had no success in finding a copy or locating other team members.

If you could help in any way I'd be most grateful..

Thanks

P J Thomas

I am trying to trace family for a family history and have come to a standstill.

I need to identify a John Lewis who lived, I think, in Miskin Street, Treherbert in 1919, worked as a collier, and had a daughter named either Gertrude Mary Lewis or Mary Gertrude Lewis.  She would be been born between May 1896 and April 1897, going by what documentation I have, but I do not know if she was born in Treherbert, but it was in Glamorgan generally.

Gertrude married a C.T. Brown - an Australian airman who was in UK and France in WWI - in St Albans Church, Treherbert on 28 April 1919.  They left the UK to live in Queensland, Australia.  I have a copy of their marriage certificate which gives her father as John Lewis but no detail of his birth or other family detail.  I am unaware if Gertrude had any siblings, nor do I know John's wife's name or which mine John worked at.  John was my greatgrandfather.

So any information would be very welcome.  Perhaps someone in the family still lives in Treherbert.

Cheers,
Robyn Lane

Hi...

Thought you would like a copy of this photo, taken about 1957, on top of Fernhill Colliery. The lads in the photo are Blacksmiths, ropesmiths and yard labourers. Gallant crew.

Have your readers got anymore of Fernhill Colliery?

Ray Smith

Your replies...

On your website you show a photograph under the above title and ask for names of those present.  To the right of Tom Smith is Peter Arundel.  Peter was in my class in Penyrenglyn Junior School and was therefore born c1947.  I last saw him on a return visit to the Valley about two years ago; he was a guide at the Lewis Merthyr Mining Museum.

Neil Phillips

This is a postcard just pre WWII.  The little girl in the left hand corner is Mavis Evans who lived just across the road. She is standing on our front doorstep. The gentleman in front of the shop window is Mr Samuels the cobbler.

Many thanks to Dr Gwylfa John, now of Swindon, who sent us the above postcard.

Here is the mural that now covers the view of the old Tappers garage site in Treherbert.

Local children from Penyrenglyn and Pen Pych Schools and Community Arts, Penyrenglyn Project all contributed to it.

How nice and bright it is  and it depicts lots of events around us. Thanks.

Sharon Morris.
