HISTORY
... Top
Written by Dave Jones, Society Secretary.
The Society was formed back in the late 50’s, when a small group of like minded men got together to form what is now known as "Treherbert and District Gardening Society”. Only one of these founder members is still with us, Mr Richard Lewis.
There was no show during its first
year and there have been only two other years when the show has had to be cancelled.
Because most gardeners are
busy people, they get itchy fingers during the winter months when there is not
too much going on with the garden. They therefore have other hobbies to keep
them busy during this period, hence the birth of the Spring Show, somewhere
to exhibit their other skills such as photography, painting, woodcarving, and
metal work etc. and classes such as knitting, embroidery and baking.
We are a busy society with lectures
supplied by Rhondda Cynon Taff education authority through Pencoed college,
we also hold talks by various members on many different subjects, our lady members
also arrange chutney and jam evenings etc.
We get quiz evenings and twice a year we have an inter-club quiz with five other
South Wales gardening societies.
We have our own store shop for members to purchase all their gardening products at greatly reduced prices. We also take advantage of the N.S.A.L.G. seed scheme where members can purchase first class seeds for as little as a third the normal rental price.
Our society is a member of N.S.A.L.G., the National Vegetable Society, the National Dahlia Society, National Chrysanthemum Society, National Daffodil Society and the Royal Horticultural Society.
We are always keen to encourage new members to our society and new exhibitors to our show where this always plenty of advice and encouragement. We have in the past some excellent trips to places of interest such as Malvern show, Wisley gardens, Pencoed open day, Nursery open days.
There were no lady members in the society until the eighties, but now our committee is formed by more than 50% ladies.

Mr Cecil Pritchard, Society President, officially opened
the show. Prizes were presenter by Mr Haydn Bundock.
The show was officially open by the society president Mr Cecil Pritchard. Who gave thanks to all the exhibitors who support our show, and thanks to all the public that came along also to support.
He then went on to praise the hard work put in by the officials and committee in putting on the show and finally to the ladies in the kitchen who work hard from early morning until well after the exhibitors and the public have gone home. The show was well attended with approx 90 to 100 people through the doors.
The popularity of our show is mainly down to the marvellous atmosphere created by our ladies in the kitchen who supply exhibitors with mountains of tea and toast throughout the few hours of staging their exhibits, along with smiling faces and plenty of good-humoured banter.
Well-known resident Mr Haydn Bundock kindly came along to present the trophies and were as follows.
In the juniors section Miss Sian Morgan walked away with six trophies, an excellent effort and Miss Holly Jones winning the other remaining trophy.
Well done all the others who entered and won second and third places. We would like to appeal to all parents to encourage the young people to enter, as it does not cost anything to have a go.
Mr Dennis Fletcher won a cup and a silver medal for chrysanths, Mr Roger Ingham swept the Dahlia Silverware winning 2 cups and 3 medals, Mrs G. Prewett and Mrs B. Davies winning 2 trophies each in Floral art, Mr David Gough walked away with 4 trophies.
Mr Haines won the Garden news “Top Vase” Gold Medal.
Mr G. Lewis won the Garden news “Top Vase” Bronze medal.
Mr Ray Rogers won the N.V.S. Silver Medal and a cup for the best veg exhibit with a superb Celery of more than 3 feet long.
Mr Rogers also won a trophy
for most points in the veg section and a bronze medal for
3rd place in the Garden news “Top Tray”.
Mr Les Hill won a Silver Medal in the Garden News “Top Tray”.
Mrs Brenda Davies also won a cup for Best Exhibit in Members Section with an excellent Cucumber.
The Best Exhibit in Show
went to Mr Roger Ingham with a first class vase of Dahlias.
But the Star of the show this year again was Mr John Oliver with 5 Trophies
and a Gold Medal well done ”Nhoj” (as he is better known) .
The show has £499 in cash and vouchers up for grabs so why not come along to our next show and enjoy the day.
This year 40 exhibitors entered 463 exhibits.
We would like to give our
thanks to all our supporters, and to the Blaenrhondda Club for the use of their
hall and facilities, and to the people of Blaenrhondda we would like to take
this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the parking problems
which we may have caused.

THE GARDEN
You gave to me a pack of seeds
And promised to supply my needs.
My spirit sang, my heart stood still
For in your garden I would till.
I searched until I knew I'd found
The perfect spot, a piece of ground
Which I would plough, my seed I'd sow,
And for your sake a garden grow.
As I began this task for you
My dreams enlarged the vision grew.
I carefully designed and planned
A place to show the world your hand.
