Stalls, Santa & Stardust - 09/12/05

Over 600 people braved the winter cold to visit the Treherbert Christmas Fayre which was held earlier this month on the high-street next to the Village Tavern (formerly the Marquis of Bute).

The event was the first Christmas Fayre run by CwmNi, the Communities First Partnership for Treherbert, but follows 2 previous market events that have received strong community interest and which have included the support of local businesses, community groups and local entrepreneurs.

Help was received on the day from 11 local volunteers – some of whom arrived at the CwmNi office at 5.30am to put out the road signs and make the area ready for the stalls.

Nearly 30 stalls and visitors enjoyed a selection of Christmas carols played by members of the Treherbert Silver Band – who came out to support the event and gave the occasion a more festive feel.

Of the 30 stalls running on the day around 9 [nine] of them were run by local community groups and charities who sold good quality items to enable them to raise much needed cash for their activities in the coming year.

Also, local businesses saw an increase in trade and added value to their businesses during the event. Even local entrepreneurs appreciated the opportunity to test out their goods against local interest and to take orders.

The event which was part funded by HSBC also had a Santa’s Grotto for the children – with over 60 children visiting the grotto and leaving with an early Christmas present.

A surprise visit was made to the fayre by 70’s pop singer Alvin Stardust who spent time walking around the stalls and who made a number of purchases.

Stallholders were a little amazed to be selling items to the former pop star, but appreciated his support for the event and his good wishes.

Keith Addis the Chair of the local Business & Economy Group said “events of this kind really bring the community together and our Christmas fayre has had the added impact of bringing Christmas alive on our high street”

Following the success of the event CwmNi are now looking to arrange a similar fayre for Easter (around April 8th) and are interested to hear from anyone wanting to trade at the event. Contact with the CwmNi office can be made by phone on 01443 777536.

"TWO PRIZES IN ONE YEAR FOR CHRISTINE!"

Christine Durbin of Herbert Street, Penyrenglyn received her prize book "Rhondda Revisited"  in September - after the original copy sent in the post had failed to arrive earlier this year.

Our thanks to the original competition organiser and previous administrator of this website - Mr Sean James Cameron - who supplied us with a further copy for Christine and who also kindly gave her a signed copy of his own book "Rhondda Voices" by way of apology over the delay in issuing the prizes.

(All other book prize winners having safely received their copies in the post earlier this year.)

Christine is pictured left with her grandson Alex Provis - an earlier prize who made his arrival on 3rd July!

We reckon there's no contest on which one is the better prize - isn't he absolutely gorgeous folks!
