KING GEORGE & QUEEN MARY
To celebrate the Coronation of King George and Queen Mary in 1910,
a large bonfire was built on top of Graig-y-Ddelw. Weeks of preparation took
place by carrying timber and items up the mountain to burn. On the evening of
the Coronation it rained, but nevertheless the bonfire took place and could
be seen for miles around. It was so big that it ignited the peat on which it
was built and it burned for days after. Deep trenches had to be dug around it
to stop it from spreading down the mountain.
