COMMUNITY CHARACTERS
Sunday, August 29th 2004

Every community has their characters and Treherbert is no exception. This week we heard the sad news that one of these characters had passed away. Bernard Jones was a well respected man in the community by children and adults alike. His dedication and enthusiasm for improving the river through Treherbert is well known. There was always a smile and a joke when you met Bernard and his love for life was felt by everyone he touched.

The memory of Bernard Jones will no doubt go down with the other great characters of Treherbert and district. There are too many to mention but names such as Tommy Tippit, Stan Saunders and Gerwyn Llewellyn are just a few.

It is only when someone dies that we fully understand the impact that he/she has on a community. You may not know who Bernard was but you will have seen his work along the river banks. Bernard held the view that many people talk too much about work rather than getting on with the job - he especially laid this at the door of many local political parties. A subject that he loved to debate.

The creation of this site is directly connected with the publication of a 'Community Directory' compiled by Bernard. This book was published in the area during the mid 1990's and contained a list of local shops, societies and organisations. Bernard was the driving force behind the directory and spent many hours pounding the streets of Treherbert and district, in rain and sunshine, collecting the necessary information. Up until a few weeks before his dead Bernard was still at work, planning more river clean ups and looking ahead.

The work of Bernard will continue and there is no doubt that when the next river clean up is held that the community will remember Bernard - his laugh, his dedication, his enthusiasm and his love for life.

So in the words of a great character: "Don't just talk about it, get out and do it."

Goodnight Bernard. We will never forget you.
