CWMNI: Who, what and where.

CWMNI is the name of the community regeneration partnership for the villages of Blaenrhondda, Blaencwm, Treherbert, Tynewydd and Penyrenglyn and helps develops solutions to community needs by using the experience of local people alongside that of the professional agencies.

The name CwmNi was chosen following a public competition during the spring of 2002. As an organisation they can help bring people together to work through local problems and solutions. The CwmNi team already works closely with local residents and key agencies and these include the council, police and health authority and voluntary sector organisation's such as Valleys Kids, Pen-Y-Rhondda Trust, Groundwork and the People and Work Unit. In fact the CwmNi team will work with anyone who has a positive contribution to make to improving the area and to providing better local community services.

CwmNi is dedicated to the regeneration of the five villages of the Upper Rhondda Fawr through the Welsh Assembly Government's 'Communities First' initiative. This initiative is still in its early days and has sometimes been confused with the 'Neighbourhood Renewal' housing improvement programme which is also funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, but which is instead being carried out by the local council over the next 10 years.

Although CwmNi has only officially been running since 2002 it has already set up five different groups. These are Health & Wellbeing; Environment & Housing; Business & Economy; Education & Youth and Life Long Learning; and Community Safety. These groups will look at developing local actions for community needs in each theme. The groups meet monthly and are open to residents from the CwmNi area and to professional agencies who want to help us develop new ways of tackling local problems. The dates of these meetings are regularly advertised in their shop window at 156 Bute Street, Treherbert. There are already a lot of plans being developed for the villages through the given theme groups.
