CWMNI:
SUMMER FUN 2004
Well with CwmNi, it certainly was! Summer may be over (we did have one in-between
the odd monsoon) but many fun and interesting activities were on offer for
young people from the five villages.
An exciting session of basket ball was held with the Rhondda Rebels at Treherbert Park, where 35 youngsters took part in fast paced skills workouts and games.
Cardiff City FC returned once again to work with CwmNi in providing skills training, the afternoon tournament session was cut short due to one for those freak showers mentioned earlier. Nonetheless all 60 boys and girls received certificate’s, poster’s and a CCFC football signed by City star turned coach Scott Young.
In order not to disappoint those budding Gigg’s and Hartson’s, CwmNi have rearranged the afternoon tournament session for half term week - Monday 25th October (12 noon – 3pm) on the Baglan Field. Invites will be sent to all children closer to the event.
First Aid
These two sessions saw 20 young people learn vital emergency resuscitation
techniques and general first aid.
Pond-dip & Treasure
hunt
A very popular day saw 20 local children visit Glyncornel Environment
Centre to learn about local pond & wildlife first hand. Ages ranged from 8yrs
to 16yrs, as you can see from the photo, the day also had a fun orienteering/treasure
hunt game – the ‘J9’ marker proving an ‘exhausting’ but ‘fun’ part.
Craft Sessions
CwmNi originally advertised 3 sessions – pyrography, mosaics & art,
but so overwhelming was the response, we laid on an additional 2 sessions to
cater for the demand for youngsters eager to hone their creative skills – thanks
to local artists John & Vera Button for their excellent tuition.
Rugby
Rhondda rugby coaches Clive and Lewis Jones were on hand to undertake general
skills training and touch rugby tournaments. Both boys and girls participated
in this introduction to our national sport.
Storytelling
Children between the ages of 4 and 10 sought shelter in Treherbert Library
(that weather again) to hear Megan Lloyd recount stories around Indian mythology,
and learn some interesting new dance techniques!
Tennis
Forget Henman, we’re sure that the next Sampras or Williams
is somewhere in this area. CwmNi’s tennis days with City Tennis enabled
many young people to receive skilled tuition and for most an introduction
into this exciting sport.
