Re-installation of Phone box on Brook Street
Following an act of vandalism on November 5th 2003, phone box was removed due to severe fire damage. Following much communication the steering group liaised with BT public services and managed to get a new phone box and line installed within the village in July 2004.

Clearance / Tidying of Electricity Meter
Liaised with SWALEC/ Western Power Distribution requesting clearance/ tidying works to be undertaken and the electricity meter at the entrance to the village to make the site look more pleasant and welcoming!

New Entrance Signposts to Village
Worked with RCT highways department to have the entrance signpost renewed as the old sign had become rusty, faded and didn’t serve its purpose.

River Clearance & Flower Planting Undertaken
Worked with CwmNi’s environmental theme group and local residents to undertake a river clean day and bulb planting day with the village. Approximately 10 local residents from Blaenrhondda turned up over both events (In total over 125 residents helped over the 5 CwmNi villages).

Directional signage on Bryn Henllan Estate
Emergency Services and the postal service were having difficulties in locating specific numbered houses upon the Bryn Henllan Estate. The steering group worked with RCT highways department to ensure appropriate and sufficient signage was erected on the estate to ensure such instances didn’t occur in the future.

Feasibility Study for local village shop
Commenced discussion with Wales Co-operative Centre to discuss residents plans to investigate the feasibility of opening a village shop/ co-operative within Blaenrhondda. The group have currently visited a similar project at Cefn Pennar and are currently in the process of designing a door-to-door questionnaire.

Seeking adoption/ renovation of pathway from Bryn Henllan to Blaenrhondda village.
Residents living upon the Upper Bryn Henllan Estate have noted that the “short-cut” route utilised by many residents to gain easier access to the main village, is only ½ adopted by the Local Authority and can be a very dangerous pathway, particularly during the Winter months. Residents are currently liaising with RCT to seek costs/ possible adoption rights for this pathway.

Match day parking to alleviate village traffic issues
Worked with local residents, partner agencies, the local school and traffic warden and Police to try and alleviate the parking problems within the village on match days. The group are currently piloting a project where the cars utilise the local school car park and hopefully will ease the congestion within the main village/ park gates.

Seeking Trees clearance on river bank in Brook Street
There is a patch of trees on the riverbank along Brook Street which is causing concern to local residents. Not only are the trees growing and starting to block residents views of the mountain and scenery, but they are becoming dangerous and are starting to over-hang the road. Only last month one of the trees in question blew down and blocked the main entrance to the village. Quotes are being obtained for clearance/ pruning of the trees and also the Local authority have been requested to supply safety notices for the area.

June 2004
We hope everyone will agree that the removal of the old electric building at the bottom of the new bridge is a big improvement, at last an eyesore gone. The community skip scheme for Blaenrhondda was a success, and there was no reported vandalism of the skips. It was just a shame that more skips couldn’t be offered, but budget restrictions meant we could only afford 5 skips, which we hope helped you carry out some spring cleaning!

We are asking the Council to place better signage in Bryn Henllan, as emergency services have great trouble finding houses. The Council have agreed to place street signage indicating house numbers to save people spending valuable time driving back ‘n’ forth. The Council have agreed to complete these works in the future, so keep a look out!

At long last, through lengthy contact with BT there is going to be a new phone box in Blaenrhondda unfortunately it will not be a red one, but anything is better that nothing as we are sure it has been greatly missed.

A lot of the comments we receive from residents refer to the littering that occurs in the river, so to help tackle this we have joined forces with Keep Wales Tidy to conduct a river clean. The first Clean Up Day was held on Sat 22nd May, followed by a BBQ for all volunteers – a big thank you to everyone who joined in!!

For those of you who attended our public meeting in April, you will be aware that the steering group are working with the Wales Co-op Centre to attempt to open a village shop in the near future. It is hoped that the shop will a community run business, but with no financial commitment required from residents. Any profits would be put back into the business. If anyone is interested in taking this forward, please contact us at CwmNi - the more support, the better the business will be!!

If anyone has anything which they think should be brought to our attention, then please contact one of the forum members or inform CwmNi and the messages will be forwarded to us. We will try our best to tackle everything suggested to us. Once again the forum would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support, and look forward to seeing you at future meetings.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Blaenrhondda was the first area to have their Steering Group up and running. Since formation the Group have worked to get the electricity site cleared and the forthcoming placement of a new phonebox. Additionally, £500 has been spent on the placement of community skips. Their current objective is to establish a village co-operative. CwmNi are providing the steering group with the necessary support to investigate this exciting proposal.
