BLAENRHONDDA TELEPHONE BOX EXPLOSION .... Top
Incident: October 21 (Tuesday), 2003. 9:45pm.

"It is only a matter of time before someone is killed". That's the reaction of a South Wales Police spokesperson regarding an explosion that occurred on October 21 (Tuesday).

A telephone box on Brook Street in Blaenrhondda exploded just before 9:45pm. It is believed that it was caused by a large firework being detonated within the confined space. The act of vandalism is the third such incident in the valley, the other two being in Tonypandy. It is not know whether there is a connection with these prior explosions.

Local resident Irene Oak was watching television when the explosion happened: "I was scared to death. I was in the house when I heard a loud bang then a picture fell off my wall. It was a miracle that a car or passer-by wasn't hurt."

The explosion was so severer that the door of the cast-iron telephone box was thrown across the road and landed underneath the house opposite. Its roof was also blown off and hit a residents house front door.

"There was black smoke and glass all over the street. It was a big explosion because I know local people had difficultly opening the door because it was so heavy.”, said Mrs Oak.

South Wales Police are now investigating the incident as ‘an explosion likely to endanger life‘, this crime comes under the Explosives Act and the culprits could be punished by life imprisonment.

Anyone with information can contact Detective Inspector Paul Burke at Ton Pentre Police Station on 01443-743-826 or by calling Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
